Head Start represented at Star Power

Michigan Head Start Association was recently well-represented at Star Power 2013.

Board President Linda McGillis and several Head Start parents attended the Michigan Sandbox Party event on the Michigan Statehouse lawn. The Association was recognized during the opening rally, and Linda was introduced to the crowd.

Michigan Sandbox Party, an MHSA partner, sponsored the advocacy event that included legislative meetings with members of the House and Senate. The event also recognized "champions of early childhood," including Gov. Rick Snyder, Lt. Gov. Brian Calley, Sen. Roger Kahn, and Rep. Rashida Tlaib.

This event comes at a time when the Michigan Legislature is deciding whether to follow Snyder's recommendation of increasing funding for Great Start Readiness Program, a move of which Head Start is supportive. At the same time, Head Start programs in Michigan and throughout the U.S. are facing deep budget cuts as a result of sequestration.

Parents who attended the event were encouraged to let their voices be heard, and to tell their legislators how important early childhood education is in Michigan. They also thanked lawmakers, such as Kahn and Tlaib, who have been supportive.

Other Sandbox Party sponsors are the Michigan Association of United Ways and the Michigan Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
