November is National Native American Heritage Month

National Native American Heritage Month is observed every November, honoring the traditions, languages, and stories of Native Americans, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, and affiliated island communities. This month—and throughout the year—we celebrate the rich cultures and histories of these remarkable groups, who contribute immensely to the character and quality of our nation. We recognize the incredible diversity of Indian Country and pay tribute to our veterans who have made significant sacrifices to protect our country.

This year’s theme at the Department of the Interior is "Celebrating Tribal Sovereignty and Identity." Tribal sovereignty ensures that decisions affecting tribes, their lands, and their people are made with their involvement and consent. The federal trust responsibility obligates the United States to uphold the highest standards of moral obligation and trust towards Indian tribes.

The Department of the Interior plays a vital role in reinforcing Tribal sovereignty, honoring trust and treaty responsibilities, and fostering meaningful Tribal consultations. Under Secretary Haaland's leadership, the Department focuses on the impacts of relocation, forced assimilation, and insufficient funding on Indigenous communities. We are dedicated to addressing these challenges while empowering Tribal governments and Indigenous peoples.
